Haringey Veolia’s War on Waste Awards highlight the impressive work Haringey schools have done to reduce, re-use and recycle their waste. Certificates and vouchers for eco products were presented to the winners and highly commended nominees whose efforts included innovative composting projects, student led re-use initiatives and exciting litter campaigns.
Councillor Nilgun Canver, Cabinet Member for the Environment who presented the awards at the ceremony said, “It is fantastic to see so many members of Haringey’s school community doing all they can to reduce, re-use and recycle. We are privileged to have so many dedicated and enthusiastic individuals in our borough.”
Also attending the borough’s War on Waste awards was Haringey Veolia’s Senior Contract Manager, Jean-Francois Moreau. He said, “Last night’s inspirational awards prove what a great job schools across Haringey are doing in the war on waste. To hear from such passionate individuals is a real treat and encourages us all to recycle more together.”
Examples of the original and exciting recycling projects taking place in Haringey schools were illustrated through rousing presentations from some of the borough’s primary and secondary schools. The school choir from Harris Primary Academy on Philip Lane, West Green also entertained attendees by performing an environmentally focussed song.
The event was organised by Haringey Veolia’s education team, as part of the Waste Warriors outreach programme. Free opportunities offered to local school-aged children include hands-on workshops, interactive assemblies and tailored recycling projects.
