Year 4 children from Orchard Primary School, Gammons Lane, have worked with Veolia Watford to build a five star bug hotel in the school’s garden.
The hotel, which was made by re-using materials which would otherwise have been thrown away, was built by year 4 children from Orchard Primary School at a workshop delivered by Veolia Watford’s Education and Outreach team. The workshop was organised as part of the fun, free and interactive Waste Warriors Education Programme which is delivered as part of Veolia’s partnership with Watford Borough Council.
The bug hotel was created as part of a series of curriculum-linked sessions which were designed to encourage young people to spend time in some of Watford’s parks and open spaces. The workshops included children learning about the importance of habitats and why it is important to protect our local environment.
Debby Holley, Year 4 teacher at Orchard Primary School, said: “Children from Year 4 were given a lesson on habitats that led on to make what can only be described as a five star bug hotel. Children used a variety of materials from the school grounds in their endeavours to build a hotel that every manner of creature would wish to stay.”
Matthew Crane, Senior Contract Manager at Veolia Watford, said: “It is fantastic to see the pupils learning the importance of taking care of our local environment. The bug hotel is very impressive and I hope the pupils enjoy exploring the different insects that visit.”
Some of the materials used in the build of the bug hotel were supplied by the Homebase store in Watford. The store supplied materials which were off-cuts and would otherwise have been thrown away.
