Market Recycling Partnership in Croydon Wins LARAC Award

Recycling in Croydon has been given a boost with the presentation of two gongs to staff from the council and contractor Veolia at the industry's top awards ceremony.

The Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC) Celebration Awards focus on the achievements of local authority recycling officers.

Croydon Council won the Best Partnership Award for the work carried out with Veolia, market officers and traders, and the council's recycling team. The award recognises the advances made in the collection and recycling of fruit and vegetable waste from Surrey Street Market at the end of each trading day.

Councillor Phil Thomas, cabinet member for environment and highways, said: "This is fine testament to the huge commitment shown, and the great work done, by staff, both of the council and our contractor Veolia, as we strive to increase the borough's recycling rates.
"They have demonstrated that they can translate their enthusiasm into valuable and tangible results that benefit everybody in Croydon, as a reduction in the volume of waste that's sent to landfill means that residents see less of their council tax diverted to paying landfill tax."

In addition, the council's community recycling officer, Joanna Dixon, was named Recycling Officer of the Year for her consistently outstanding work in encouraging residents to get involved in Croydon's comprehensive recycling services.
Joanna, who has been with Croydon Council for almost four years and previously worked at Veolia, said: "To get this award is tremendously exciting and is really a reflection of all the great work that's being done, by many people, to push the recycling message in Croydon."

The annual awards recognise the dedication, hard work and successes of recycling officers, their teams and partners, and celebrate the best in the sector.
