In the last 21 years over £260,000 has been awarded to local projects through the SELCHP community fund.
On Wednesday 29 March 2017, community groups have gathered for the award ceremony that will look to distribute a total of £12,300 between seven winning community groups.
The energy recovery facility, South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP) celebrates another year of community spirit by giving back to the people that are constantly giving back to their local communities.
Veolia have awarded funds to a range of organisations including Deptford Park Playclub. The club has been awarded £3,000 to fund their brilliant Award winning family support holiday provision. The initiative includes a face painter, a play therapist, lunch, a sports coach and a story teller/drama.
“For a small volunteer run project like ours, every penny received helps keep this precious community resource going. A big thank you to SELCHP for their continued support.” Moira Kerrane, volunteer Playclub manager.
Another initiative that has been successful in applying for the fund is London Bubble Theatre Co. The Project delivers performing arts training, and welcomes 24 NEET young people on a 13 week program to improve their confidence, wellbeing and employability. The young people are referred to the program from a range of agencies including criminal justice system, local council and word of mouth. Following the successful completion of the program each young theatre maker is offered opportunities for paid work experience at Bubble which enhances their future employment opportunities.
“Our project received £2,000 in funds in order to help us go further and support the great work we have been able to achieve in the last five years. Please do come along to one of our sessions, we’d be pleased to welcome you into the world of performing arts.” Shipra Ogra, Project Leader.
Other projects that have also received funding include, Bermondsey South Community Garden, which aims to turn a space within their community into a community garden that will hold social activities; Docklands Settlements Rotherhithe, an initiative that aims to provide activities for disabled people of all ages; RSLB, an organisation that provides expert support to community members that are blind and partially sighted children and their families, helping them cope with and live beyond their sight condition; CLYDE early childhood centre, a project which aims to provide an in-house and language therapy service for individuals that are vulnerable, disadvantage or with special educational needs, including children with disabilities; And finally, LEAN (Lewisham Education Arts Network) Deptford which is a small charity that supports all those involved in arts education with children and young people in Lewisham.
Robbie Jameson, General Manager for Veolia SELCHP, said: “The SELCHP Community Fund has allowed us to interact with a range of brilliant initiatives that are taking place in South East London and have benefitted so many of our community members. I am excited to see what projects will come through this year’s applications!”
Community groups awarded funding gather with SELCHP and Veolia staff at Millwall FC to celebrate.
