In the last 20 years, more than £250,000 has been awarded to local projects through the community fund from energy recovery facility: South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP).
This year, six local community groups in Lewisham and Southwark will benefit from a total of £12,000 for their projects which support local people.
Robbie Jameson, General Manager for Veolia SELCHP, said: “We think a quarter of a million is cause for celebration and we are delighted to continue to support invaluable local community projects year after year. We have seen some wonderful programmes enjoyed by a diverse range of people thanks to The SELCHP Community Fund. We invite many more groups to apply this year.”
In Bermondsey, a community kitchen has been awarded £2,000 to support long term unemployed 16-24 year olds not in training or education gain the skills and confidence to help them succeed.
Mike Donovan, Chair of Bermondsey Community Kitchen, said “This fund has helped ensure we can sustain ourselves and carry on, enabling us to take on extra students and without such support, we would not survive.”
Five other groups were also funded in this round including:
- The Southwark Sea Cadets will use £1000 for a rowing machine to offer young people opportunities for training and personal development.
- Football clubs in Burgess Park will be sustained with a £3,000 fund to continue successful outreach programmes which give children life skills.
- John Donne Primary School, Downside Fisher Youth Club and Lewisham Opportunity Pre-School also received funding to support reading, renovating community space and specialist education.
