Children attending the Deptford Park Play Club narrowly avoided being frozen out this half term thanks to a last minute intervention from Veolia’s nearby energy recovery facility: South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP).
With a broken down boiler and no budget for repairs, the play club was going to be without heating or hot water. The club’s manager, Moira Kerrane, got in touch with SELCHP to ask for help and the team immediately came to the rescue, donating staff time and expertise to help get things back on track. They have also committed to funding the maintenance of the boiler for a full year.
Moira commented: ‘Thanks to the lovely team at SELCHP, playtime is back on! They’ve fixed our boiler and payed for a full year’s maintenance so we can keep the children warm and happy while they play. We rely on volunteers to run the club and it’s fantastic to know there are also local businesses prepared to give us support.’
At SELCHP, black bag waste that would otherwise have been sent to landfill is used as a fuel for energy recovery. The facility creates enough electricity to power 48,000 homes and also provides heating and hot water to 2,500 homes via its district heating network.
Robbie Jameson, General Manager for Veolia SELCHP, said: ‘It was great to be able to use the expertise of our staff at the facility to help the community. We were delighted to be able to help, so that the children were able to enjoy play time after all.’
SELCHP operates a community funding scheme that is open to schools and community groups near to the facility. Applications are open for the 2016 fund until end of October, for details on how to apply please contact [email protected].
