This week schools across Sutton borough are celebrating Recycle Week which is the UK’s annual event to build awareness of, and encourage increased participation in recycling behaviour.
Veolia’s Communication, Education and Outreach Team is working with local children to instil recycling behaviour from an early age. Veolia, the recycling and waste collection provider for London Borough of Sutton, have presented to over 700 pupils about the importance of the 3 R’s - reducing, reusing and recycling with a fun quiz and interactive activities in school assemblies.
Rachel Briggs at one of Sutton’s Eco Schools - Robin Hood Junior School said: “Recycling is important as we can help reduce the amount of materials sent to landfills. As a school, we can reduce the money we spend on materials e.g. using scrap paper for work/wet play and using recycled materials in DT and science. It is important to teach the children these values too, so they can help save the environment.”
Veolia’s work with local schools is not the only way the borough has celebrated Recycle Week. Sutton Council has also been running a targeted Facebook advertising campaign, using engaging and thought-provoking recycling-themed animations.
