For some people, Monday is a day that is most dreaded, however for 10 year old Danny Hopkins from Sutton, it is the most exciting day of the week as he sees the recycling collection vehicles empty the bins down his street.
Danny has been enthralled by collection vehicles from a very young age and it has been a dream for him to see a vehicle up close for longer than a minute. Veolia extended a special invite to Danny and his parents to visit one of their depots in South London where Veolia’s runs the London Borough of Sutton’s waste and
recycling service. Danny was given a rare opportunity to not only sit in the recycling collection vehicle, but to also ride in it too. One of the drivers from the collection service rounds drove him around the depot to Danny’s delight. The recycling vehicle has a split back with two compartments which collects food waste every week and paper and card and plastics, glass, cans and cartons on alternate weeks.
Mother, Leanne Hawken said “Danny is fascinated with dustcarts and every Sunday night he makes sure that all his neighbours have put their bins out for the collection the next day. Monday is Danny’s favourite day. Once they have been collected he makes sure that his neighbours bring their bins back off the pavement and into the
front garden. He was delighted when the new collection service started as this meant that they had more bins to put out for the recycling collections.”
“After the visit to the depot, the very next day, Danny kept his hi-vis jacket on all day at school. He is so happy. Thank you to Veolia for it a truly special and memorable birthday.”
Veolia gave a goody bag and a well-earned hard hat and hi-vis jacket for all of his recycling efforts in encouraging his neighbours to recycle.
