The improvements see recycling collected weekly instead of fortnightly in new blue-lidded bins. To make it even easier, residents no longer have to separate their recyclable materials into three boxes, as they all now go into the one bin.
This includes cardboard, which no longer goes in the green bin used for garden and food waste due to changes in national composting standards.
The green garden and food waste bin will continue to be collected fortnightly while the black general waste bin will still be collected weekly.
Watford’s Elected Mayor, Dorothy Thornhill MBE, said: “Watford residents regularly tell me how pleased they are that we have kept weekly rubbish collections, while other councils moved over to a fortnightly service. Last year we were successful in our bid for government funding to enable us to continue to provide this valued service and to help us make our recycling scheme even better. It may take a few weeks to get used to the new scheme but it will be easier for residents.”
Sending waste to landfill costs more than it does to recycle. By having a simpler recycling scheme, recycling will increase and less waste will go to landfill.
