What a WOW for Haringey Schools!

During this year’s National Recycle Week (Monday 16th June – Sunday 22nd June), students and staff from Haringey schools received recognition for their efforts in the war on waste.

The War on Waste Awards, which were hosted by Veolia in Haringey and Park View Secondary School, highlights the impressive work undertaken by Haringey schools to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste over the past year.

Certificates and vouchers for eco products were presented to the winners and highly commended nominees. The third annual War on Waste Awards were made extra special as Kasia Zimolag from Bruce Grove Primary School, who won in the category of Primary School Teacher of the Year, received a special handmade trophy made from recycling material collected in the London Borough of Haringey.

The special trophy was made from 40 aluminium cans that were littering the streets of Tottenham. Once collected, the cans were melted and the hot metal was shaped into the trophy.

Alexander Sarafian, an architectural student at London Metropolitan University who made the trophy especially for the event, said: “The trophy is a great way of showing what our unwanted materials can be recycled into. It is a great reminder for everyone who works or lives in Haringey, not just the schools, to do their bit to recycle more. It’s a team effort!”

To top off the War on Waste Awards, a choir from Belmont Junior School performed at the ceremony and entertained the audience with an environment-themed song, reminding everyone why they need to reduce, re-use and recycle more.

Veolia Haringey’s Senior Contract Manager, Jean-Francois Moreau, said: “It is great to hear all about the fantastic work that Haringey Schools do to tackle their waste. Their contribution is not going unrecognised and I hope these awards inspire them and other schools in the borough to continue the effort.”
