Know your plastic

Plastic is a valuable resource that can be well preserved through recycling, which is why it’s important to #KnowYourPlastic and to make sure you put the right things in the right bins.

Our planet is what we make it, and protecting it’s vital resources lies in our hands. Here’s a quick guide to show how you can easily contribute:

Recycle these? YES, please!

Here are the most common plastic items that can be recycled at home:

✅ Clear and coloured plastic bottles and milk bottles

✅ Shampoo, shower gel and soap bottles (without the pumps), as well as spray cleaners (with the triggers in)

✅ Food pots, tubs and trays

Don't recycle these

Place in the general waste bin plastic materials that aren’t recyclable, such as:

❌ Polystyrene and PVC packaging

❌ Crisp packets and sweet wrappers

❌ Squeeze tubes, like the toothpaste ones

❌ Laminated pouches, such as for coffee or pet food

Put the right thing in the right bin

Do your best to avoid contaminating your recycling bin:

✅ Make sure your recyclables are empty, clean and dry

✅ Remove any film lid from plastic containers and put it in your general waste bin

✅ Separate plastic packaging from all cardboard and paper boxes, before putting them in the recycling bin

✅ If still in doubt about some items, leave them out of the recycling bin

#KnowYourPlastic (and when in doubt - check)

How often have you found yourself in front of your recycling bin, wondering if the plastic package or item your holding should be put there? To help answer these questions, Veolia has partnered with the Brent, Camden, Lambeth and Southwark Councils, for the #KnowYourPlastic project. Backed by Resource London the campaign aims to increase awareness about correct plastic recycling.

Check your local council’s website to see which plastics are recyclable, as there can be slight variations from borough to borough:
